28mm Bolt Action

Bolt Action from Warlord Games/Osprey has proved to be a popular ruleset for skirmish scale (platoon plus) encounters. Tending towards the abstract and free-flowing, rather than detailed, its strengths are an immersive turn sequence and easy-to-learn rules.

15mm Bolt Action

The Bolt Action supplement Tank War allows for encounters between larger forces than the original rules. It works well in both 15mm and 20mm, with the compact ground scale of BA suit the smaller miniatures.

15mm Battlegroup

The Battlegroup series of rules from Iron Fist Publishing is designed for use from squad through to battalion sized encounters, using 15mm or 20mm figures. Tending towards the more detailed end of WW2 rules spectrum, it creates neat in-game functions for a bunch of units that are seldom seen as useful on the table - wire teams, radio trucks, resupply vehicles, ambulances and so on. Its strengths are its very detailed army lists, and its interesting "break point" morale mechanism.

Mortem et Gloriam

A new ancients ruleset from Simon Hall, designed to be scale independent. Has introduced some interesting features into the traditional ancients game - custom hit dice and activation cards that allow the quality of troops and the shifting fortunes of battle to be quickly factored into orders and combat.

At the gates of Nicaea, First Crusade, 1097

May 2014 – Lindsay Hall kindly supplied these images of a game he played on a recent trip Gauteng. Played with the DBM ruleset in 28mm, the game featured massed blocks of cavalry (over 120 Seljuk horse archers, by his count). The majority of the figures were from the collection of Johan Delannoie.

Rapid Fire Games

Rapid Fire, authored by Colin Rumsford and Richard Marsh, is the ruleset used by the Penininsula Wargames Group to recreate large-scale WW2 encounters in 20mm. The image below were taken during the club's 2012 "big game" which recreated Operation Market Garden, played over 3 days on 6 huge tables.
