Mike Schubert's English Civil War Project.

I had the pleasure of participating in my first English Civil War game (see the brief battle report here), and a good percentage of the figures that graced that table were from the collection of Mike Schubert. He sent me this brief description of his collection:

"The majority of the figures are from Warlord Games ECW / TYW range, the exception being the pike and command figures of Carr's and Potley's regiments and the Minion cannon & crew which are Perry Miniatures figures.

"The army would not have been possible without the Warlord Games plastics range. Michael Karsten presented me with part of a starter battalia - enough figures for an infantry unit, a cavalry unit and ten Firelock armed figures - and that started the whole thing (madness ?).

"I already had an interest in the period and had acquired the Warhammer ECW rule set prior to this.Needless to say the ECW bug bit me and I got a full starter battalia next and with a bit of mixing & matching (for the pike poses) had my first units sorted out and started painting them. The first infantry unit was Charles Essex's unit of "foote" as their orange / tawney coats with yellow facings just "had" to be done, followed by Lilburne's in red coats with green facings. Bit by bit I bought more figures concentrating on getting the infantry units done first and sometimes ordering an infantry box and an additional soldier sprue. The next unit that I painted was Lord Saye & Seles in blue coats followed by Lord Brooke's in Purple.

"The figures for Grantham's regiment ( in dark wine red/russet) are from a box of the TYW Imperial infantry (same figures as the two ECW infantry boxes but with extra metal pikemen & commander (in 3/4 armour) and extra musket rests and tall hats). The musketeer figures of Potley's (yellow coat) and Carr's (green coat) are Warlord Miniatures figures whilst their pikemen and command figures are from the Perry Miniatures ECW range (slightly shorter due to their bases not being as thick as those of the Warlord figures).  The figures of Jones' regiment are all "standard" Warlord figures.

"I converted two of the Firelock figures into an officer and drummer by using spare arms from the command sprue before the actual Firelock company box made it's appearance. When painting the cavalry figures I rang the changes by using different sand colours for the buff coats and also gave each unit a specific "unit" colour combination for the saddle cloths and saddle cloth edging. Most of the cavalry figures are the "standard" Parliament/Royalist cavalry figures with a box of the TYW Harquebusiers (in green coats with yellow facings), a box of Cuirassiers and a box of Dragoons thrown in for good measure.

"The Cuirassiers were part of a cavalry wing "bundle" together with two boxes of "normal" cavalry and a character figure (Earl of Essex in my case).

"Two of the light guns are "borrowed" small AWI cannon and converted infantry figure crews, while the Minion and crew are from Perry Miniatures. My latest acquisitions are a Warlord light gun and Demi-Culverin and their crews."

Was wondering where you got the uniform guides to do these. I ahve a tonne of them but not painted any because I have no suitable references.

    Regards.

  3. Hi
    Re: Uniform guides
Start by looking on the Baccus website (http://www.baccus6mm.com) and look under "how to" and then "Painting ECW". Their Parliamentarian guide is more comprehensive than the Royalist guide.

There's a list of regiments for Parliament & Royalist units listed according to coat calour on the Wargames Design blog (http://www.wargamesdesign.com). Look under the "...more" column and then history. Said site has an awesome collection of flags that can be downloaded to boot.
